Former New Yorker editor, erstwhile cartoonist, and self-taught artist John Donohue, who has famously sketched “all the restaurants” of Paris, New York and London in distinctive hand-drawn style, turned his pen to capture Napa Valley’s most memorable restaurants in 2022. He returns to Napa Valley in 2025 for a live drawing event followed by a spirited conversation about the allure of restaurants, sketching as a practice, completest projects, biting off more than you can chew.

John’s prints are available for purchase at The MAC and in the online store, and a portion of proceeds generously donated by the artist to benefit the museum’s nonprofit arts education programs.

About John Donohue

Donohue began creating whimsical drawings of New York City restaurant facades in 2017. Since then, he has completed more than 1,000 illustrations, many of them posted on his website: alltherestaurants.com. Donohue finishes all drawings in his signature one-color style, often embellished with just one distinctive accent color taken from an awning or design element of the restaurant, and sells signed, limited-edition prints. Sales of his works have benefited restaurant workers and other non-profit organizations, including the Napa Valley Museum. He has also penned three books collecting images of his works: All The Restaurants in New York City (Abrams, 2019) and A Table in Paris (Abrams, 2021) and A Taste of London (Abrams 2023). His first book Man with a Pan was a New York Times bestseller, in 2011. He lives with his family in Brooklyn and draws at least twice a day.
