"Mary Blair | Mid-Century Magic"

Meet the Beatles! Just one month after they exploded onto the U.S. scene with their Ed Sullivan Show appearance (at the same theater where Paul recently appeared on the final Late Show with Stephen Colbert), the Beatles: John, Paul, George, and Ringo, began working on a project that would bring their revolutionary talents to the big screen. In A Hard Day’s Night, the bandmates play cheeky comic versions of themselves, capturing the astonishing moment when they officially became the singular, irreverent idols of their generation and changed music forever. Directed with raucous, anything-goes verve by Richard Lester, the soundtrack features a slew of iconic pop anthems including the title track, “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “I Should Have Known Better,” and “If I Fell.A Hard Day’s Night reconceived the movie musical and is one of the most deliriously entertaining and influential movies of all time.

The 1964 film and soundtrack album revolutionized visual culture. Its fast-paced, irreverent style, French New Wave-inspired cinematography, and iconic album photography (by Richard Freeman) helped birth the "pop art" aesthetic, directly shaping modern music videos, graphic design, photography, and pop-culture film. Director Richard Lester applied French New Wave filmmaking techniques—such as jump cuts, handheld camera shots, and quick edits synced to the music—to create the "Can't Buy Me Love" sequence. This visual rhythm gave birth to the modern music video, establishing editing conventions later adopted by networks like MTV and by countless music video and film directors.

A Hard Day’s Night opened in 1964, just after Walt Disney unveiled the Mary Blair-designed "it’s a small world” at the 1964 New York World's Fair The screening will be held within the exhibition: Mary Blair: Mid-century Magic at the Napa Valley Museum Yountville (NVMY).
