On Saturday, the Napa Valley Museum will host the Oktoberfest & Car Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can view an array of classic sports cars, hot rods and motorcycles, and enjoy live music and food, beer and pretzels. Admission is free.

The tone here seems a bit more community-minded, offering an entertaining and edifying entry to conceptualism for locals and adventurous, well-heeled visitors who have a little time to kill before their dinner reservation at the French Laundry. The inclusion of Do It (Archive), a collection of text panels on key historical works in the “Do It” genre, previous Do It presentations, and printed ephemera offer a bit of context prior to the main gallery, where the works have been created and displayed.

From a compendium of 250 instructions, the museum will present artworks, ongoing performances, take-home instructions, and above all, opportunities for the public to engage in the creation of contemporary art. Artists include Louise Bourgeois, Gilbert & George, Alison Knowles, Yoko Ono, Sol LeWitt and Olafur Eliasson, among many others.

The rare behind-the-scenes tour of the museum, located on the grounds of the Veterans Home of California, gave visitors an opportunity to see an area usually off-limits to the public. The collection, which focuses on items that depict the history of the Napa Valley, includes a wide range of objects.
